ARTIST STATEMENT

“My work in oils has always alluded to the natural environment. I have started to believe that my painting practice has been a slow contemplation into how we, as humans, relate to the earth we came from. The fragility of this relationship I feel is echoed through a darkness and anxiety that comes from a depth and feeling of unease through my chosen compositions. There is a desire to embrace nature but also to behold and respect it as a reminder of our own mortality and inferiority.

During the pandemic, I planted a garden on my terrace. I grew up on the coast and had begun to feel trapped in the city. Therefore, this small garden was my offering and attempt to reclaim my relationship to the soil.

I began to notice similarities between tending a garden and making a painting. Each elicited a particular mental state and required a level of labour, knowledge and skill to achieve the desired outcome. And then something is created, placed in front of someone or surrounding them and sharing an experience.

Previously, I worked in a mostly abstract manner. But in recent work I have started to paint the formations of plants, trees, flowers and vines more figuratively, intersecting with the materiality of the paint and fuelling compositions that allow for exploration around the canvas, akin to how you explore a garden.”
